The one-and-only Donner Party of rock ‘n’ roll is back with 11 brand-new original songs and one questionable cover. Nobody started 2022 expecting more Groove Pigs (except superfan Jack Kelly), but that is exactly what the world is going to get. Featuring amazeballs guitarist, singer and lyricist Darren Whittaker, fab bassist and electric guitarist Dan Jewett, superstar drummer Arena Joe Heavey and what-the-hell-is-he-doing-but-it-works stunt vocalist/lyricist Richard Prasch, the band is ready to serve up more porcine hits on its third album, “Ghostlight.” The tracks deal with some of today’s most intractable issues like: properly breaking down boxes, recycling, managing a busy life, carport regulations, being a practice boyfriend, refilling propane tanks, doing different things on different days, phone calls and apples. Everything was written and produced by the Groove Pigs and is 100 percent Jack Kelly approved. The band always likes to give its legions of fans a cover song and this time the boys take on Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman.” Were they successful? You be the judge. But by far the most weighty and impressive undertaking on “Ghostlight” is the Apollo 11 suite. Using original NASA audio, our heroes Darren, Joe and Dan each came up with their own interpretations of that historic 1969 event and the other Pigs backed them up like Michael Collins duly orbiting in the Command Module. Without a doubt, with this smash new album, the Groove Pigs are “on time at the present time.”
